Washing

1. Wash shirt after wearing them. 2. Machine wash or hand wash using warm water. 3. Do not use bleach to prevent discoloration.

If you don't have good quality steam iron, you should try to iron your shirt when the fabric is damp. You can press it far more easily to remove all wrinkles, and it's less likely that you will damage your shirt in any way.

Storing

Use a supportive hanger such as a wooden one or a thicker plastic one. If the hanger has firm shoulders, it will prevent unsightly bumps. Wire hangers are not recommended for your shirts. Women's designer shoes are often seen as strappy high heels, but even comfortable women's designer sneakers are sold out there.

There are Gucci sneakers, Prada sneakers, and Fendi sneakers, in addition to the high heels you might be imagining. The idea that all design shoes are "dress" shoes is a wrong notion. These are available in athletic styles, also. Although the design of Fendi sneakers are not as closely associated with the typical designer shoe, designer sneakers are a big item. One thing that you can be sure of when buying Gucci or Prada designer sneakers is the fact that what you are buying is a trusted, luxury brand. You can be sure of the quality of the materials used for the shoes as well as the workmanship involved in making them.

Design shoes are high-end shoes, although there is some disagreement over exactly which labels are considered designer. Typically, there are two types of designer labels: those that have been around for decades or even over a century, and those that are smaller independent designers that are very "in the moment" trendy.

Most of the designer shoes come from Italy. Italian shoes are known for their durability and high quality. The top three classic designer names for footwear are Prada, Gucci, and Fendi designer shoes. All three have been around since the early twentieth century, and their names have become synonymous with style and luxury.

Nothing ruins the look or comfort of a dress shirt faster than a bad fit. A long sleeve shirt uses two numbers: neck and sleeve -- a 16/35 shirt means a 16-inch circumference neck and 35-inch long sleeves. A short sleeve shirt is measured by collar alone, often with an SS (as in 16SS or 16/SS) to designate short sleeves. Waist measurements aren't included because shirts have plenty of room for most men.

Neck measurements change in 0.5-inch increments, sleeves usually in 2-inch increments. That's why they are often marked 16/34-35. When measuring your neck, look straight up, this old trick actually expands your neck to its fullest -- often boosting you up another size -- which means added comfort when you aren't counting ceiling tiles.

To measure the sleeves, you'll need help. Place a tape measure at the base of the neck over the spine, then lay it flat along the top of the back to the shoulder. From the shoulder, move along the arm around the bent elbow to the point where the thumb connects to the wrist. The total length (should be very close to half your height) is your proper sleeve length. For a slightly fancier look, give it an extra inch.

Men's dress shirts are made in three basic patterns: Regular-fit is the standard; it is cut full for best comfort. Big and tall shirts are designed 1.75 inches longer than regular and a little wider (how much varies by manufacturer. Trim-fit (also called athletic-, slim-, or tailored-fit) shirts are tapered in the chest (about 5 inches less than regular) and waist (about 6 inches less).

Parts

A long sleeve shirt usually has a barrel cuff, also called a button cuff, which closes with a button. Actually, two; if you wear a 35-inch sleeve and have 34-inch arms, using the second button should bring the shirt length closer to what you need. French cuffs are the fold up variety that needs cuff links. Both are excellent for the office, evenings out or social events. French cuffs are considered executive attire and a more elegant fashion statement. Many French cuffs (and the collars that go with them) are white, even on colored or patterned shirts, while a 'self-French' or 'self-button' cuff uses the same color or pattern.

Collars come in three basic styles: The turn down collar is the standard. Length and width of the tips vary by manufacturer and ebb or flow with the tides of fashion. Usually, they have stays sewn in to keep the shape. The button-down collar (erroneously called an Oxford collar) has no stays -- buttons keep the tips in place. Collarless dress shirts are a growing trend. At present, collarless shirts are generally limited to formal wear or causal tops, not for the office.

Fabrics

There are several options available, some of which deserve little consideration. Like wool in men's suits, cotton is king of dress shirt fabrics. Though less durable than man made fabrics, a cotton dress shirt breathes, making it more comfortable to wear and, with proper care, cotton shirts always look better.

Poplin

Originally a silk blend, modern poplins are usually 100 percent cotton. Smoother than Oxford, lighter than broadcloth, it is the most-often-used fabric for dress shirts and formal wear. Poplins do vary in weight, summer weights being very light and somewhat translucent; winter weights being heavier, but still thin compared to other weaves.

Oxford

Among the most popular dress shirt fabrics; Oxford is a softer, heavier cloth with a larger weave. Most have button-down collars -- it's a trademark. Oxford cloth shirts, all-cotton or cotton-blend, are very appropriate for business and casual wear in long sleeve or short. Pinpoint Oxfords, pinpoints for short, is a lighter, smoother material.

Twill

Heavier than poplin or pinpoint; lighter than broadcloth or Oxford; with a distinctive diagonal weave (including the famous herringbone twill) similar to Oxford. All-cotton or cotton-blend twills make great dress and casual shirts.

Broadcloth

Originally a woven wool, the heaviest common shirt fabric has also switched to cotton. Broadcloth can be smooth as poplin or have a twilled, almost ribbed texture. Weights do vary, as do weaves and textures. Broadcloth is a durable fabric for casual, dress and formal shirts.

Other materials

Man-made fibers (polyester, rayon, dacron, etc.) are very sturdy and very economical, but these petroleum based long-chain polymers don't breath well. They can be excellent imitations of natural fibers or they can look bad and feel awful. Blends with cotton, wool or other fabrics combine the strength of man-made with the comfort and appearance of naturals.
Linen is a classic which looks good and makes a great men's shirt if you want to have an ongoing, intimate affair with an ironing board.
Silk, the strongest natural fiber, is just spectacular for men's shirts or anything else -- warm, receptive to dyes and soft against the skin like nothing else. Unfortunately, it fades easily if not dry cleaned, tends to stretch out of shape and is the most expensive. Most men save it for ties or the most formal occasion shirts. Silk blends (often with wool or cotton) feature improved elasticity and affordability.

Care

The care tag on most dress shirts reads: Machine wash cold. Tumble dry. Press with a warm iron. Do not bleach. That tag is there to help you keep your shirt looking good, so read it and do whatever it says. Some cottons must be ironed after every wash to remove the wrinkles, but factory-treated cottons are now available that need minimal, if any, ironing. (Although, a quick touch-up is never out of order.) Don't be afraid to bleach white shirts; pick out one of the new color-safe bleaches for colored and patterned shirts.

If the collar has removable stays, as most designer shirts do, be sure to remove them before laundering -- they will get lost if you don't. If you can afford it, nothing looks better than a professionally laundered and pressed shirt.

If you buy from the clearance or close-out rack, or wait for end-of-season sales or hit the discount outlets, you will save even more. (and you'll be the only one who knows!)

Questions and Answers

When must I wear a white dress shirt?

The short answer is, when everyone else wears them. It's a must with tuxedo or dinner jacket. A few companies still have strict dress codes; following them is a key to corporate acceptance and advancement. Some men -- lawyers, bankers, politicians and senior executives, for example -- are silently expected to wear a pure white dress shirt or one with a minimal pattern. You'll also see many of these gentlemen favoring French-cuffs, if you look closely. That said, many companies and organizations have adopted very casual attire. Colored, striped, checked or other patterns on dress shirts are vastly more popular (read: 'socially acceptable') than they were just a generation ago.

What does business casual mean?

It doesn't mean wear your gym shorts to work (unless you work in a gym, of course). It means jacket and tie optional; casual shirts, jeans or even denim shirts may be acceptable. This makes the dress shirt a key to your style and look, if you choose to wear it to work. A dress shirt that fits well, looks good and stands out from the crowd a little can be valuable. After all, regardless of how good you are, if you are more noticeable, you are more promote-able.

What about pockets and monograms?

Dress shirts generally have one pocket, over the left breast; a few sport two or none, a few pockets have button-down flaps. Pockets are not there to use as a trunk or filing cabinet. Glasses, a pen or two, a few business cards or a name tag are all they can handle without detracting from the great look you are working so hard to achieve. Monograms are embroidered initials; some fashionistas say they must be just above the cuff of the right sleeve, others say they should be seen only atop the breast pocket. Most people think monograms are a waste of money.

The best?

It is a good idea to buy one dress shirt -- white, poplin, French cuffs, the whole nine yards. This shirt is to be worn only for weddings, funerals, court appearances, IRS audits and other serious occasions. Laundered professionally and pressed after every use, it is kept in a protective bag after each wearing.

The rest?

Now that you have new dress shirts, you may need a new suit to go with. Every man needs on good wool-flannel or wool-gabardine suit in black or gray (for the above named occasions) which you treat with the same care as that best shirt. You'll also need black dress shoes, black leather belt and a silk tie/pocket hanky set with a conservative pattern or stripe. This is the one where you buy the finest you can afford and don't look back -- when you wear this ensemble, you really do look spectacular.

Use warm water when you shave as warm water softens hair. So it might be a good idea to shave after having a hot bath/shower.
When shaving, you have to follow the direction your beard grows in.
Always use sharp blades. Avoid ones with rust, no matter how little the rust is. Don't risk getting infections. Check the packaging of your razor to know the date you should stop using it.
Gels work better than foams when shaving as they create more protection to your skin.
Rub your skin upward gently before shaving. A bit of facial stretching will make the face more elastic, better for shaving.
Rinse with cold water after shaving. Cold water helps close pores and helps prevent dirt from getting in.

From Princeton to Philadelphia Fashion Week with Commonwealth Proper

Born and raised in Princeton, New Jersey, Craig Arthur von Schroeder has always nurtured an interest in design, particularly in buildings and furniture, since his father was an architect.

Craig was impressed by his father's creativity and independence, as well as by his brother's brief modeling career, which entitled Craig to some "cool" hand-me-down shirts, shoes, and accessories.

Looking up to his older brother, Craig deemed clothing a logical extension of what he wanted to do in life. Nevertheless, Craig soon found himself in Philadelphia going to law school. Well, let's have Craig fill in the gaps for us himself!

First, Craig, why Philadelphia?
I moved to Philadelphia to go to law school at Rutgers-Camden. Philadelphia was appealing to me because it was a big city that was manageable and was still growing and evolving. New York is so saturated and crazy that I wanted a place to root my life that I could have an effect on.

And why law school as opposed to fashion school?
I've always had that creative itch—to make something new out of nothing. But I was too busy playing soccer and studying to really flex my design muscles. Now I've retired from soccer and have time—or at least have made time—to try my hand at new things. And there are more opportunities out there than I had ever imagined, including, of course, clothing.

What led you into fitted shirts?
The silhouette and fit of our shirts comes from my own experience wearing button-downs on a daily basis. The legal community—bless its heart—has a lot of talented minds but generally lacks fashion sense. It's from the ill-fitting shirts I am used to seeing on my way to work and my daily legal practice that inspired me to want to fix the problem. And, believe me, we've fixed it.

Why not other articles for men?
We don't get involved in the pretentiousness of influence—it's just shirts, albeit the best-fitting shirts one can buy off the rack. If we were to branch into, say, cologne, then that might be appropriate to come from an inspiration like "a fall's walk through the park" or something flowery like that. We use incredible fabrics and details, like double-fused collars to tell our story. That way, it's more accessible.

Sum up for me in one word the philosophy behind Commonwealth…
Versatility. We want our shirts to be appropriate for work yet be able to transition to a night on the town. The length of the tail, for example, allows the shirt to be worn tucked in, but easily untucked without looking too long and clown-like.

And what about Commonwealth Proper's look or style?
Americana with a modern, updated fit, created in the independent spirit of Philadelphia itself.

How would you describe the fashion scene in Philadelphia?
It's growing. There are Philadelphia fashion blogs popping up, fashion-centric events and a lot—a lot—of new designers. We're all coming up and growing together, which makes it a robust and exciting community to be involved with.

How does Commonwealth Proper play a role in this scene?
We hope to be at its forefront and not only continue to do well in this city but expand and bring the spotlight back on this city and its talent.

How do you compare the scene in Philadelphia to New Jersey?
I'm originally from Jersey, which, of course, has it's own set of stereotypes about fashion and beyond. It always bugged me that there was a lot of great stuff going on in Jersey, but people just have their own preconceived notions that it's a crap place. It's not. Parts are rough, no doubt, but that doesn't mean there are no redeeming qualities. Philadelphia has a similar bad reputation, but I think it also has a lot of incredible people. And it's taken some time to discover them all, but hopefully it will continue to be appreciated by more and more newcomers.

Do you hold to any "green" practices or principles?
I used to produce another line out of Peru, China, Macau and Hong Kong. But I've gone all local with Commonwealth Proper. It's less of a carbon footprint and you also get higher quality through hands-on management. Buy local. It just makes sense.

Spurred on by the Vintage Photos of Helmut Newton

Born in Berlin to a German-Jewish manufacturer of buttons and an American mother, Helmut Newton (1929-2004) snapped his first pictures of interest at the age of twelve.

After fleeing Nazi Germany, Helmut set up a fashion photography studio in Melbourne, Australia and later in Paris, soon emerging as an internationally renowned photographer.

For Spring 2010, Helmut Newton's vintage photographs revisit us as they have spurred on English designer Simon Spurr to bring us a traditional silhouette with avant-garde cuts and enlivened colors reminiscent of the 1970's ultra modernity.

The collection is a snapshot of confidence and relaxed sophistication for the modern man.

The African Finch, Now Playing at Theatre de la Mode

Last week, Theatre de la Mode alighted on the perch of London Fashion Week, flapping the wings of its 2010 spring/summer collection in all the bright plumage of citrus orange, deep water coral, and sunny tangerine.

Designer Christopher Kelly remarks "the silhouette of gentleman's lounge wear is one of ease and boxed drape that fit the mood of Theatre de la Mode."

Chris drew his inspiration from the African finch, which he applied to the leisure wear of the 1930's. He conceived the idea when his eyes were drawn to the hand-painted sign of a pet shop, the star of which was an African finch.

Since true finches are seed-eating songbirds, why not sit pack with a healthy sunflower snack and, flipping through the photo gallery, listen the melodic chirps and coos of the African finch.

Bess & the Owl of Minerva

black plumed ravens,
velvet cloaked black magicians,
skins of reptiles,
cyber-hookers,
wandering tribes of street kids,
and the man in the leather uniform—

these are merely a few of the characters that have kept company with Bess designers as they have been creating for the autumn/winter season of 2009.

These horrific nightmares have not only haunted Mary Shelley, who breathed life into Dr. Frankenstein, but also Edger Alan Poe, who narrated the descent into madness with his epic poem, the Raven.

But—alas!—it is Hagel, who puts his finger on the essence of the a/w 2009 collection, which he sums up in the famous quote, The owl of Minerva spreads its wings only with the falling of the dusk.

In other words, philosophy can only explain a historical condition just as it is passing away.

Steeped in deep introspective thought, Bess was conceived in 2000 by husband and wife team, Douglas and Bess Abraham, who draw their inspiration from shredded Victorian to the post-Punk vintage of Lafayette Street in New York.

This little statuette represents the magnificent level attained by the Nuraghic artists in their sculptural work of descriptive reproductions and shows the evolution of warrior armament right to the minimal details.

Unfortunately the little statue had been already disappeared by the time Giovanni Lilliu described it in his beautiful book, Sculptures of Nuraghic Sardegna, 1966.

The clothing worn by this archer recalls that of the Chinese warriors of the Emperor Qin Shi, 3rd century BC (Xi An, China), depicted in the famous "terracotta army," as well as the fabulous armament of the Japanese samurai. The helmet is a conical type, presenting a very high and elaborate rim with a lower part of spiral work and an upper part that is bound to metal studs. In back, the head armor presents a decoration of herringbone, while the braids fall in front.

The peculiarity of this helmet is the small fox or weasel head, which is placed in front just under the plume. The statuesque figure represents the type of animal force that is incarnated in a warrior: the fox representing astuteness and the weasel—speed. It not merely recalls the depiction of the Egyptian god Anubis but moreover the description of the archer Dolon, a character of the Iliad (Book X), who wears "a helmet of a weasel"!

Ours is wearing a long overcoat that covers the body, almost down to the knees; the upper part seems to be elaborated with reinforced metal plates, which shield also as short sleeves. He is wearing a large defensive plate that hangs from a Y-shape harness, similar to that of No. 38, which is finely decorated and extends to the rear where it supports a cone-like case, a quiver, and launching cane.

The legs are protected from knee to ankle by finely made shin guards, which are composed of a reinforced tibial finishing with tassels on the top and a snug-fitting structure that seems to be made of strips of intertwined leather.

In back, ligatures create extra space to alleviate the complex structure and allow for easy bending of the limbs. The feet are bare. His right hand is clenching an object, which has disappeared but could be a weapon—perhaps a javelin?

As for the left arm, it is protected by a wonderful example of an armored glove (similar to those of the samurai), which, on the back of the hand, bears protective metal washers. The rest of the limb shows a reinforced splint and a long elbow guard, both of which are connected to the sleeve of his jacket with leather straps. The weapon that he is clenching is a long, simple bow.

Particularly curious is the object that is strapped across the shoulder, which can be seen in part from under the arm. They look like two tubes of equal length with some metal fittings. What could it be?

Given the position that allows a rapid extraction, maybe it was a quiver with a reserve of arrows... or it could be a tool disassembled into two pieces to reassemble when the need arises, such as with a javelin or a spear? Unfortunately, one can only dream since the precious and unique figurine has disappeared. It would be useful, given its immense historical value, to inquire into its whereabouts.

Book Review: "The People of Bronze"

This is a second article that I have translated from the book, the People of Bronze (il Popolo di bronzo in Italian), which describes in great length the fashion of the Nuraghic men, who lived more than 4,000 years ago in Sardinia. For more information on the author, please refer to Part I:

Man with Jacket and Hood

The character represented here is wearing his hair in two short braids, which, starting from the very top, fall down in front of his ears. In back, the hair is kept short.

He is wearing a garment of clothing, which I would dare to define incredibly "modern." It consists of a jacket that is closed in front with long sleeves and a hood. The shortest section of the coat is decorated with a triple band that ends in a frill with long fringes. In front, on the lapels, one can see the buttons that close it. Underneath it, the hem of a simple tunic hangs out.

In addition, this man of Serri is wearing a pair of long pants that have a crease in front and in the back. The feet are bare. He is carrying a plate of food for offering.

Of important note, the custom of men wearing braids has persisted in Sardinia until about 1800. In fact, numerous noble Sardinians used to wear such a hairdo with pride, as cited in the dictionary Angius-Casalis and in the stories of Grazia Deledda.

Book Review: "The People of Bronze"

When I was travelling through Sardinia earlier this month, I picked up a fascinating book entitled the People of Bronze (il Popolo di bronzo in Italian), which describes to minute detail the styles and fashion of the Nuraghic men, who lived more than 4,000 years ago.

In a previous article, Nuraghic Men Rocked the Styles!, I posted a design and gleaned much information from the book, which deeply impressed me. I am amazed at the author's keen insights into the styles of her Sardinian ancestors and, in turn, I was equally struck by their sense of fashion.

The author, Angela Demontis, is an artist and designer, who for many years contributed to the Naturalistic Museum Sa Corono Arruba as scientific designer. Angela has been fascinated with the bronze statuettes called bronzetti, which she describes to great length in her book.

For the next several articles, I have obtained permission from the author to post the English translation of three designs, which represent the Nuraghic fashion scene. The following article is entitled A Man with a Bag from Aidomaggiore:

This bronzetto, unfortunately very destroyed, represents a man who is carrying some very important objects on his shoulder. On his head rests a simple cap and he has short hair.

It seems that he is wearing a tunic with one flap crossing the other, as seen with models no. 70, 72, 80; but they could also be a Cossack and a skirt, which is tied at the sides. The shoulders are covered with a rectangle mantle, not very long, with a turned-up collar, which is closed with double latches and a button.

This person from Aidomaggiore holds in his fist a double rod, which, resting on his shoulder is bent probably due to the weight of the objects at both extremities. In front, exactly under the hand, we see an object, which, although difficult to interpret, I have rendered as seen in the design.

Extreme corrosion and particularly the fact that it was not kept in a museum make the analysis of the object difficult. Hanging from the rod in the back, we see a cylindrical object whose surface is divided into six sections.

Although corroded, one can see clearly the little handles, strap, and hinges of the symmetrical enclosures placed at both ends of the container. It consists of a handbag with two caps (in the design at the bottom), which probably served as a case for musical instruments like the benas and launeddas ('triple flutes of cane').

Containers like this are still used by the "old" maestros exactly for carrying such cane instruments. One cannot exclude other uses, too, such as for carrying various tools and other.

At the start of my trip back to Italy, I was walking through the airport of Milan where I saw this advertisement! As a swimmer myself, I had to jump in and join the excitement!

Dooa—Fresh New Trends for Young Men

Although I have known and worn the Dooa Denim Industry label for years, I still know very little about this brand, except that its showroom is located just outside Naples, Italy, in the fashion commercial center, which we call CIS (pronounced cheess).

Despite Dooa's target clientele, which ranges from 16 to 30 years, I always find something appropriate for myself.

In fact, back in 2006 I purchased a pair of Dooa pants, which continue to bring me compliments no matter where I go!

The look is usually very casual; but do not be fooled, the fit is perfectly tailored to the contours of the male physique.

Hamaki-Ho: for Work, School or Play

Hamaki-Ho is another label that I have known for years, but I still know very little about.

Do not let the name mislead you: although it may have a slight Japanese ring to it, the company is 100% Italian—Neapolitan, at that!

The company runs a showroom just outside Naples in the fashion commercial center, which we call CIS (pronounced as cheess).

While the Hamaki-Ho look is relaxed, the style leans more formal than casual with suits, ties, and dress shirts.

Popular Island Dress & "L'ndrezzata"

L'ndrezzata (pronounced lan-drey-zzata) is a characteristic popular dance that has been preserved and passed down through the centuries in the town of Barano on the island of Ischia.

The name of the dance—l'ndrezzata in dialect and l'intrecciata in Italian—derives its origin from the crescendo of unbridled movements and swift, orchestrated swings of clubs, which appear to be "intertwined" into a frenzied dance that is reminiscent of historical combat.

The traditional dance is performed with 18 dancers, a clarinet player, a tambourine player, and a "corporal." Half the dancers sport a red vest and a white shirt with a green sash, while the other half don white shirts and green vests with red sashes. All performers wear white pants and socks. Each dancer holds a club (mazzariello) and a wooden sword (spada).

The clothing recalls what the fishermen wore back in the 1500's.

20th-Century Island Life in the Bay of Naples

The first hundred years of freedom in Naples and its bay were beset with a sea of troubles attributable to the mismanagement of our liberators, who drained the South of its capital funds and transferred industry elsewhere.

With offices dismantled and public services suspended in Naples, the aristocracy deserted the city, leaving the posterity of squalor, crime, and unemployment.

By the end of WWI, strikes, disorder, and repression were rampant. Multitudes groped for consolation in either "isms" or emigration, which truncated one third of the population. Along with the rest of Italy, Naples and its island-studded bay have survived a Fascist regime, 2 world wars, and a myriad of governments.

Emerging indisputably as a leader of fashion and design, the nation has numerous hot spots of sartorial activity and several major epicenters of apparel production. Although marred by a reputation for counterfeit, the Naples area happens to number among the nation's primary centers for fashion design and production.

One of the greatest occurrences of the 20th century was the birth of sportswear in the 1920's, which marks the beginning of contemporary menswear as we know it today. From there on, well, it's all history, which I have assembled for you in the form a slideshow that will walk you around the island of Ischia, introducing you to the men and their styles throughout the 20th century.

2010 Trends & Takeaways from the period:
The relaxed tailoring of the 20th century prevails in most 2010 spring/summer collections. Similar to the entry of sports clothing into daily dress during the 1920's, sweat suits have been modified for common attire. Work clothing like jumpsuits and laboratory coats will also enter the wardrobe of everyday.

Naples, Nations & New Notions

Refused of their demands, the freedom fighters of Naples and its isle-studded bay beat the drum to unification as a last resort. In 1861, the tiny island of Ischia joined the forces of Garibaldi and united with the Republic of Italy.

Nine years later, on September 20, 1870, even my tatà tatà (dialect for 'great grandfather') enlisted with the troops of Italy's first king, Vittorio Immanuele II.

Bombing Rome's gate, Porta Pia, great grandpa and the partisans liberated central Italy from the domain of the Papal States and rebaptized Rome as the nation's political capital. Alas, Naples and its surrounding islands have been slowly acculturating to the mainstream of Italian peninsular life ever since.

The 19th century laid the foundation of the modern era for menswear, introducing concepts like lounge wear, formal wear, outdoor wear, sportswear, and the tuxedo—but all based on the 3-piece suit. Changes occurred progressively by the decade.

With the new notions of equality from the French Revolution, menswear became less ostentatious and more uniform. Embroideries and lace went out the window. The length of pants dropped to the ankle. Boots became a mainstay. The dandy was conceived.

Double-breasted waist coats featured long tails and high collars. Overcoats were particularly façonnable. Broad shoulders and a narrow waist portrayed a real gentleman. High collar shirts were worn with wide cravats.

Out went the wigs and in came natural hair, just oiled or waxed. Curly hair was prized, as well as sideburns and—later—goatees. Conical hats evolved into the top hat and, soon wide brim hats, bowler hats, and straw boaters were sported.

Eventually the frock coat replaced the tailcoats, which were reserved for formal occasions, while numerous new styles of coats and jackets appeared on the scene. Collars evolved continually, as well as the shape of ties and bow ties. Shoe heels grew in height.

2010 Trends & Takeaways from the period:
Although the tuxedo will not vanish from formal occasions, the most formal look of spring/summer 2010 entails a relaxed version of the dapper debonair dandy with a double-breasted jacket and fedora hat. Like the popularity of boots in this period, boots will be one of the key accessories that add authentic masculinity to the androgynous trends of spring/summer 2010 collections.
